His works began under the reign of King João IV (1640-1656), starting in 1641, in the context of the Restoration of the Portuguese Independence, in order to strengthen the defense of this strategic stretch of the border. His project was aimed at modernizing the protection provided by the old medieval castle, transforming the village into the main Algarve's main square.
The defensive set is complemented by the Revelim of Santo António de Castro Marim, east of the village.
