There are two theories about the foundation of Quibdó, which was founded in 1664 by the Jesuit fathers evangelizers. Francisco de Otra and Pedro Cáceres, with the name of Citará and the one that the Antioqueño miner, Don Manuel Cañizales, founded it with the name of Quibdó (Cacique Guasebá y Quibdó) in 1690; both facts belonging to the seventeenth century and inhabited mainly by indigenous people and blacks.
It was built a municipality, by executive decree of May 30, 1823, issued by General Francisco de Paula Santander, when the parishes of Nueva Granada were founded in districts.
The municipality of Quibdó borders on the north with the municipality of Medio Atrato, on the south with the municipalities of Río Quito and Lloró, on the east with the municipality of El Carmen de Atrato, on the northeast with the department of Antioquia, on the West with the municipality of Alto Baudo.
It has an area of 3,337.5 km2 and a population of 97,714 inhabitants, which represents 32% of the total of the department. 65% are in the urban area. The municipal seat of Quibdó is located at 5 ° 41´13´´ north latitude and 76 ° 39´40´´ east longitude, with respect to the Greenwich meridian; It is between 43 and 53 m.s.n.m. and has an average temperature of 28 ° C.
The Municipality of Quibdó is located in the region of equatorial calms and according to the Holdrige system (1963), it corresponds to the life zones of very humid tropical forest (bmh - T) and tropical rain forest (pb-T). Which are characterized by high rainfall and temperatures above 24 ° C. The municipality of Quibdó has three climatic units: Warm super humid (Cs), with an approximate extension of 275,000 Ha, equivalent to 82.39% of the territory, where all the populated centers of the municipality are located. Medium super humid (Mh), with 47,500 Ha and 14.23%, the western sector of the Bebaramá reservation is found in this area. Very cold and cold humid and perhumid (Fh), 11,250 Ha. Equivalent to 3.38%, in this sector there are no populations.
Because it is located in the Northwest of Colombia, at relatively short distances from seismogenic sources such as those of Murindó and Bahía Solano, Quibdó is a city that is located in an area of high seismic threat, according to the Colombian Code of Seismic-resistant Constructions (1995 ). This is complemented by the existence of soft soils, saturated almost all year round, a situation that makes the city's buildings more vulnerable to seismic surges. According to the historical information and the instrumental record in Colombia, in the immediate vicinity of Quibdó there are no seismic sources with the capacity to generate earthquakes that cause considerable damage to buildings and urban infrastructure. However, the earthquake sources of Murindó and Bahía Solano have an important influence on the city. To spatialize this trend, the geo-instability map is presented, where 97.9% of the territory corresponds to a low susceptibility with an area of 326,875 ha and an average susceptibility corresponding to 6,875 ha that is located to the west of the municipality, where they are located the towns of Villa Nueva, Guamiandó, Gitradó and Mojaudó. The historical map of the development of earthquakes in the Municipality of Quibdó from 1951 to 1994 is also presented, where it can be seen that the village of Tagachí has the highest frequency.
Agriculture constitutes their primary activity and the main source of subsistence, men with axes and sometimes with chainsaw, make the socola and tomb of the mountain. Plantain, rice, corn, cassava and sugarcane crops are sown, usually by stick. Exceptionally, they commercialize plantains, bananas and corn in Quibdó. The cultivation system is rudimentary. Fallows are made on the banks of streams and streams, which rotate every two to four years.
Hunting is carried out exclusively for consumption, the species most frequently consumed are guagua, tatabro and some birds. The livestock sector continues in importance, represented by the raising of pigs and some birds, also fishing for sardines, guacuco, mojarra, micuro and plump.
