One of the most famous images of the Jewish quarter is the tombs entangled and invaded by the vegetation. In fact, it is one of the most important places of Jewish heritage in Prague, where numerous strangers coexist with famous personalities of the city's Jewish community.
The cemetery is one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in Europe, dating back to the first half of the 15th century. The earliest star dates from 1439: it marks the grave of the poet and scholar Abigdor Karo. The last burial of the cemetery took place in 1787, before the imperial decree of Joseph II that forbids the burials in the center of the city.
The cemetery has 12,000 tombstones from different eras distributed in a very small space. The number of buried bodies is much greater: although the cemetery has grown larger on several occasions in the past, its surface has been insufficient for the Jewish community of the ghetto. With the ban on unearthing the bodies, the tombs were being put together, and in some cases stacked one on top of the other.
During the Resnascimento, the more elaborate stars take the name of the deceased or symbols that show their professions. The most recent Baroque tombs are decorated with long inscriptions highlighting the virtues of the dead.
Among the most famous personalities of the Jewish community of Prague buried here:
- the great religious and scholar Judah Loew ben Bezalel, better known by the name of Rabbi Löw, associated with the legend of Golem (passed away in 1609),
- the mayor of the Jewish City, Mordechai Maisel (died in 1601),
- the humanist scholar David Gans, historian, mathematician and astronomer (died in 1613),
- the scholar and historian Joseph Solomon Delmedigo (died in 1655),
- Rabbi David Oppenheim, collector of ancient Jewish manuscripts and books (died 1736).
The ancient Jewish cemetery is part of the Jewish museum. The museum is accessible with a ticket that allows entrance to several synagogues of the neighborhood (with the exception of the Old New Synagogue).
The entrance is at the Pinkas Synagogue (where the Holocaust memorial is located) and the exit at the Klaus Synagogue (which has a collection of ancient cult objects).
Opening days:
From November to March: every day except Saturdays from 9am to 4:30 p.m.
From April to October: every day except Saturdays from 9am to 6pm.
ATTENTION: THE FORMER JEWISH CEMETERY IS CLOSED ON THE DAYS OF JEWISH RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS.
Unique entrance to the synagogues Maisel, Spanish, Pinkas, Klaus and to the ceremonial halls (Jewish museum of Prague).
