Archaeological complex made up of six mausoleums, it presents architectural characteristics of the Chachapoya culture and is decorated with cave paintings in which about a hundred funerary bundles were found, fine fabrics, ceramics carved in wood, decorated matt kippus, crowns and various objects of great value. It is called ´´Laguna de los Condores´´ because the first people who discovered it, state that on the impressive lagoon, whose waters are blue-green, in previous years these birds of prey (condors) were seen flying. Around this beautiful lagoon are the old constructions (mausoleums) in whose interiors funerary bundles and handicraft objects were found, which have currently been transferred to the Leymebamba museum.
93 km south of the city of Chachapoyas (hours and 30 minutes by car) it takes you to the town of Laymebamba, from where you travel 45 km to the lagoon (12 hours on foot and mule). It is required mandatory in the presence of a guide.
Covered by cloud forest, on the eastern flanks of the Andes, a row of tombs hangs over the waters of a lagoon. Disguised in a narrow natural shelter, 100 meters above the Laguna de los Cóndores, the structures remained abandoned for almost 500 years. Comprised of six chullpas, or tombs, and the foundations of a seventh, the funerary site is one of 18 documented sites on the limestone cliffs looming over the Laguna de los Cóndores. Despite the fact that the workers who discovered the site, at the end of 1996, they removed practically the entire mausoleum, cutting the funeral bundles with machetes and destroying valuable context information, the more than 200 recovered mummies, and a number of offerings, indicate dated Chachapoya (ca. 800-1470 AD), Chachapoya-Inca (ca. 1470-1532) and Early Colonial (ca. 1532-1570).
The builders took advantage of a natural ledge of the cliff, modifying it, leveling the floor and carving smaller cornices on the cliff, where they built low walls of stone and mud mortar, which served as support for the back of the ceilings of the tombs. Each tomb is approximately 3 meters high and is divided into two levels by a platform of small logs. The structures are basically quadrangular, built in blocks of limestone seated with mud mortar. They all have windows that look out over the Laguna and the old settlement of Llaqtacocha.
