Formerly this place was called Hueco del Alto or Alto de las carretas, as it was there where the carts pulled by oxen stopped before crossing the Tercero del Sur stream (today Defensa Street and San Lorenzo Passage) on their way to the center of the city. Later its name changed to Alto de San Pedro, and then Plaza del Comercio (1822), among others. In 1900, the name of the square changed to the current one.
It currently constitutes one of the main pedestrianized tourist walks in Buenos Aires. Around it are cafes, bars and pubs with their tables on the square; and also antique and handicraft houses. Musicians and street dance shows abound, including tango exhibitions. On Sundays the San Telmo Fair takes place, during which the square and the surrounding streets are occupied by stalls of antiques and curiosities that are visited by numerous tourists from both the country and abroad and that contribute to give that area of the neighborhood a very particular physiognomy.
The buildings around the square maintain their original appearance thanks to the support of the City Museum Commission.
Plaza Dorrego is the popular name for Plaza Coronel Manuel Dorrego. It is located in the heart of the San Telmo neighborhood, in Buenos Aires, Argentina and occupies a quarter of a block. It is delimited by Humberto I ° and Defensa streets and by two intersections: One parallel to Humberto I ° called Bethlem, and another parallel to Defensa with the name of the bandoneonist and tango composer Anselmo Aieta.
In 1978 the square was declared a Historic Place because the people of Buenos Aires adhered to the Declaration of Independence of Argentina on its site.
