Comalcalco had its development and time of splendor between the 1st century BC and 9 AD, ie during the Classic period.

It was contemporary of cities such as Piedras Negras, Guatemala; Yaxchilán and Palenque, Chiapas; It had links with Uxmal in Yucatan and Tikal in Guatemala, as well as with the Toltec, Nahuas, and Totonac peoples of the highlands of Mexico.

The most notable feature of Comalcalco is the material used in the construction of its buildings, since baked bricks were used instead of stones like other Mayan cities.

The first buildings on the site were made of stucco-beaten earth, and the temples, which move on weak pyramidal bases, were made of wood and straw.

The archaeological site and local museum open from Monday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm.

Admission on Sundays and holidays is free.
