The Church of Our Lady of Cola was built in the early 17th century. In the following century, the altarpiece of the main altar was built, and in the 19th century. In the 19th century, bell towers and side altarpieces were added.
This sanctuary was from very early one of the most important pilgrimage places of Baixo Alentejo. It is assumed that at the beginning of the 18th century, its annual pilgrimage held on 8 September was already the most important in the region.
