The Barril beach also known as Armação beach is one of the beaches of the Island of Tavira. Formerly it was the base of a framework for tuna fishing, hence the name of Armação beach. Today you can still see the dozens of anchors that are in front of the old warehouses now converted into beach supports.
The access is made by a bridge that crosses the Ria Formosa following a rail and pedestrian path that crosses the island, in a total of about 1.5 km. Bicycles and motor vehicles are not allowed on this route. In the bathing season the crossing of the island is also done by a small train, which ensures a regular service. The Decauville railway line is about 1 km long, in a narrow 60-km gauge parallel to the pedestrian path. The line was built with the initial purpose of serving the old tuna fishing rig located on Barril beach.
The Barril beach is one of the calmer beaches of the south coast of the Algarve, escaping even at the peak of the bathing season to the floods that characterize other beaches in the region.
During the tuna fishing season in the summer months, they lived in a camp where today is Barril beach about 80 fishermen and families. They lived from tuna fishing, which passes off in migration to the Mediterranean and back to the Atlantic. This frame would have been founded in 1841 and operated until 1966.
