The southern part was against the wall. The access to the upper part was made by a staircase, which turned it into a kind of balcony walk, that would dominate the interior of the square and the river.
The plan of the wall that sealed the old square was demolished in 1821, the same happening to the chapel of Nª Sª do ''Ó'' (the image of the patron saint was transferred to the Church of the Orphans and then to the chapel of Largo do Terreiro) .
In the projects of João de Almada and Melo was included the construction of a grandiose fountain that would be like the backdrop of the square.
The remains of this source are of the meager elements that have remained of the restructuring of the square, because the south arcade, the Door of Ribeira and the Chapel of Nª Sª do ''Ó'' disappeared with the demolition of the wall. The arcade and house on the west side were also distorted in relation to the original project.
The eastern part articulates with the urban front of Barredo, parallel to the river. This one is based on the so-called Ribeira wall, in which a series of arcades were opened all over, once separated by small glasses. The arches had commercial functions and the upper passage operated as a walk or viaduct, through which access to the dwelling houses, located on the wall. All these elements are in solidarity with each other and were inspired by the disappeared galleries Adelphi, London, constituting an architectonic and urbanistic element of rare value.
Some arcades have been converted into shops and others serve as a link to the streets and alleys of the Barredo neighborhood. This set can not but be related to the port facilities of the first half of the nineteenth century. Almost at the end of the wall, between two of the arches, is the memorial dedicated to the Ponte das Barcas disaster, an elegant relief by Teixeira Lopes (father).
The transformation of the square implied the remodeling of the Cais da Ribeira, which was insufficient for the movement and demand that it had.
Thus, in 1784, João de Almada e Melo and the other members of the Public Works Board prepared a document in which the quay was to be enlarged. It was then determined that a new landing pier would be built from the Guindais peninsula to the traditional anchorage.
The Guindais wharf was on the left side of the Luis I Bridge, to which it enters from Porto, and was destroyed by the construction of the bridge pavement and the marginal road wall. The last pawl of the wharf is still half submerged, even under the bridge.
Access: Funicular dos Guindais.
The square was transformed in the XVIII century by initiative of João de Almada and Melo. The opening of Rua de S. João, on its initiative, improved the connection of the square to the upper part of the city.
Several collaborators of merit participated in the new arrangement of the square, which would lock inwardly the west-south-east side of the square.
