Alfons Mucha is famous for the works of his Parisian period (1895-1904). Nowadays, it remains the undisputed icon of the spirit of the 1900s, which was perfectly illustrated by posters and figures forever associated with the Belle Epoque period.
Despite this, we must not forget that Mucha is first and foremost a Czech artist, attached to his land and his people, who still considers him as a child of the Czech homeland. You can admire his works in the Cathedral of St. Vitus, where he made some stained glass, or in the Municipal House (Obecní Dům), emblematic building of "Art Nouveau" in Prague. However, in order to truly discover the artist, it is best to visit the Museo de Arte ... A large number of his Parisian works that have made him famous, are there.
The second part of the museum is an invitation to discover the unknown facet of the artist. In exile for several years, Alfons Mucha was also a convinced patriot, defender of the Slavic people at a time when discontent reigned within the Austro-Hungarian empire. Back in Bohemia in 1910, he fouched his art at the service of the National Renaissance movement, including in his figures, characters from the Moravian folklore or Sokol celebrations. Mucha was also the one who designed the stamps and notes, emblems and symbols for the new Republic of 1918.
This other reality highlights the absence of the "Epopeya Eslava" in Prague, which the artist considered as his masterpiece: a grand lyric and prophetic song dedicated to the Czech people. If the project for the installation of the work in Prague is realized, perhaps one day the work of Mucha will be considered more completely in his country of origin.
