One of the most picturesque buildings on the island of Kampa, the Sova water mill, which has been rebuilt several times since its first construction in the Middle Ages, is home to the city's most dynamic modern and contemporary art foundation. In this museum you will find numerous works by František Kupka, Otto Gutfreund and other contemporary Czech artists.
Renovated with elegance and sobriety in a definite contemporary style, the building, far from being glamorous, is open to the neighborhood and the river through its large windows and terraces decorated with contemporary sculptures and a large glass tower. This cozy place is an invitation to discover the arts of our time.
Like many other foundations, the Kampa museum is the result of a beautiful history that mixes commitments and passion for art. This history is that of Meda Mládek, art historian, patron of Czech artists during the communist period, passionate about contemporary art and who, with the help of her late husband, was able to gather with her husband a splendid collection that can be enjoyed in Prague.
The most prestigious part of the collection features works by František Kupka, avant-garde Czech painter and pioneer in abstractionism, and Otto Gutfreund, one of the Czech sculptors with the greatest influence in the 20th century thanks to his cubist works. The works of both artists are present in a single exhibition, allowing to calibrate the contrast and the magnitude of the works of these great artists.
The permanent exhibition also reveals the art of Central Europe, mainly from the 60s to the 70s, as well as the works of personalities such as René Roubiček, Václav Cígler, Aleš Veselý and Eva Kmentová.
As a result of the same desire to expand the knowledge of the current artistic creation, the Kampa Museum organizes numerous temporary exhibitions in collaboration with artists from the contemporary art scene of Central Europe.
