In neoclassical style, the house was the old Imperial Palace that D. Pedro II had built in 1848. The gardens, designed by Jean Baptiste Binot under the personal guidance of the emperor, deserve attention. In addition to storing the objects and furniture of the palace, the Museum still gathers relics from Brazil Empire such as the crown of Dom Pedro II. There is also a picture gallery and the Historical Archive of the Imperial Museum.
