On May 13, 1917, and in the months to October, the three little shepherds, Lúcia dos Santos and their cousins, Francisco and Maria, and their cousins Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto. Jacinta, saw a lady who identified herself as the Lady of the Rosary. On October 13, a crowd gathered at Fatima (estimated at about 70,000) witnessed a miraculous solar phenomenon shortly after the Virgin appeared to the children.
The first national pilgrimage to Fatima took place in 1927 and the basilica began to be built in 1928 and was consecrated in 1953. With a tower of 65 meters high, crowned by a large bronze crown and a crystal cross, the basilica is flanked by hospitals and retreat houses and has in front of it a grandiose square in which is located the small Chapel of the Apparitions.
Fátima is a Portuguese city, seat of parish, subdivision of the county of Ourém.
At the ecclesiastical level, the city is simultaneously the seat of diocese with the city of Leiria. The name was modified by Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1984. The only existing parish in the city has as an oracle Our Lady of Pleasures. The parish of Serra, as it was originally known had been dismembered from the Collegiate Church of Ourém in the year 1568.
