Puerto Colombia was founded on December 31, 1888 by the Cuban engineer Francisco Javier Cisneros, who began the construction of the building, the first large maritime terminal in Colombia in the first four decades of the 20th century, and the municipality. of permanent development with the strength and joy of the Caribbean. This town is 118 years old since its foundation, it takes its name from the inauguration of his wife and at the suggestion of Cisneros, who was the President of the Republic at that time, Rafael Núñez, calling the town Puerto Núñez; it is in the acceptance and response that Puerto Cisneros debated, which the ingenious businessman challenged by calling it Puerto Colombia. It maintains the status of rectification until June 24, 1905, when it is classified as a District (Municipality) by Decree No. 19, issued by the Governor of the Department of Atlántico, General Diego A. De Castro and approved by Decree No. 488 of April 26, 1906, signed by the then President of the Republic, Rafael Reyes and his Minister of Government, Gerardo Pulecio. Puerto Colombia is flat and warm, it has several cities between Los Manatíes, Aguadulce, Rincón, Salado and Balboa. The water currents are limited, there are several tributaries, among which El Arroyo Grande stands out, which flows into Blaboa and the Caribbean Sea. Their subsistence agriculture is the same as livestock. Fishing is important to its residents. As a place of interest are the beaches of the Caribbean Sea, the bathing areas that extend along them in Sabanilla, Salgar, Pradomar, Miramar, around the Pier. Likewise, the Historical Monuments such as the Salgar Castle, the Centennial Pier and the Railway Station. The architecture of the Mayor's Office building, the Santuario Mariano Nuestra Señora del Carmen, the Hotel Pradomar and its cozy cabins.
This beautiful municipality is surrounded by the Cupino, Pan de Azúcar and Nisperal Hills. Paragliding has been practiced since its inception, and today it is extremely deported in different parts of the country and the world.

FLORA Based on a combination of climatic, geological and edaphic factors with temperatures above 28o. With little rainfall and a predominance of saline waves, the conditions are for the development of a vegetation characteristic of a very dry tropical forest, according to the classification of habitable areas of Holdridge, which presents a physiognomy that dominates the shrubs. thin spiny with very small heads and a dense layer of hyapes combined with cacti in great proportion. In areas where there is less water, desert-type vegetation is observed, dominated mainly by low grasses and cacti. In the small areas that surround the forests, especially in the Balboa forest, there are environmental conditions for the development of mangroves, also small patches of shrubs mixed with bare areas prone to flooding. In Puerto Colombia, Roble, Trupillo, Matarratón, Ceiba, among others, predominate.
FAUNA The fauna is closely linked to the supply of habitat for an ecosystem that depends on the type of vegetation cover and the quality of the water, with the exception of water, the terrestrial ecosystems that are present in the Municipality, in natural conditions in which they cannot offer a quality. habitat and the great diversity and number of species of high scientific importance or for the conservation of groups of wildlife, added to these natural environmental conditions, buildings for housing, industry and recreation and infrastructure such as roads, sidewalks and some small areas dedicated to La livestock and agriculture, ended up decimating, transforming the end of the supply and quality of the habitat for the wild fauna that used to inhabit the region, surviving positively in small groups of a general type.
Economy
According to the activity streams, the economically active population is divided into: 15.37% is dedicated to commerce, 9.68% to construction, 8.38% to the manufacturing industry, 6.37% to transport and 5.99 % to real estate activity, the rest of the population is distributed in the main branches of the economy.
Formerly it was the main port of the country, there are several tourist centers in this region. Town that with an old dock, recalls the time of glory that lived at the beginning of the century, as the first maritime port in the country. Its wood and steel muesli was very attractive to natives and foreigners for the trade of the time. It is a flat and warm land that has scorpions like Aguadulce, El Rincón and El Salado; and beaches such as Punta Roca, Sabanilla, Puerto Caimán and Pradomar; as well as an old Spanish town, the Castillo de Salgar.
